“My child, don’t reject the Lord’s discipline, and don’t be upset when he corrects you. For the Lord corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights.” Proverbs 3:11-12
My 4 yr. old son doesn’t have a care in the world besides food, toys and getting his own way.
I discipline him not because I want him to miss out on what he considers “fun”, like riding his bike in the middle of the street; no, I set up boundaries for him because I love him and know what’s best for him.
He has no idea why this isn’t a good idea, but I do.
Sure, it may be “fun” for a little while, but sooner or later a car will come zipping around the corner and a serious consequence could very well be the outcome.
Is Christianity Just a Bunch of Rules and Restrictions?
When most people think of Christianity, they think of restrictions and not being able to do anything fun. But this couldn’t be farther away from the truth.
God corrects us and gives us His Word as a blueprint for our lives here on earth because He loves us and knows what’s best for us.
We may not see the dangers or negative consequences resulting from our choices and actions, but sure God does.
His rules and standards for living here on earth have been created as boundaries in order to protect us and keep us in His perfect will.
Our God sees the bigger picture and the end result. He knows where our destructive paths will ultimately lead, what negative consequences will eventually come, and exactly how our poor choices will play out.
We may not reap the effects of our disobedience right away, brothers and sisters, but trust me from personal experience when I say, “Our God will not be mocked.”
“Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant.
Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature.
But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” (Galatians 6:7-9)
The truth is, we will one day fall off of the edge that we keep getting closer and closer to, and eventually, the fire that we keep playing with will burn us.
Sin is only fun for a season, but sooner or later, we will experience the negative consequences of our sinful actions. But God wants to spare us from going down that road of shame and regret.
God Want to Show You Another Way
When God tells us to trust Him, to rely solely upon Him, and accept His divine guidance, then we need to surrender to Him. We need to obey these Words of our heavenly Father because He alone knows what’s best for us.
He has good plans for our lives brothers and sisters, “Plans to prosper us and not to harm us, plans to give us a future and a hope” (Jer. 29:11)
But, so often we’ll make our own decisions, walk down our own paths, and completely disregard His still small voice.
When we, as His children, try and run our own course we are the ones who suffer.
We are the ones who miss out on God’s best by running full speed completely in the wrong direction.
God never intended for us to live by our own rules, or to set our own standards, or strive to reach our own goals. God rather created us to know, love, serve and follow after Him.
He will give us everything we need to live a life of honesty, purity and integrity in the midst of this wicked and fallen world.
So even though Satan may be dangling sin right in front of us, our God is faithful! “He will never allow us to be tempted more than we could handle, and promises to always give us a way out.” (1 Corin. 10:13)
Our Heavenly Father has good things in store for us, so let’s stop selling ourselves short. Let’s stop running our own lives by relinquishing our control.
We no longer have to do things in our own strength, because we now have the strength of Someone stronger. We now have the wisdom of Someone wiser, and we now have the empowering of Jesus Christ our Savior!
The temporary highs of this world are not worth the everlasting consequences they bring.
Our adversary the devil came to seek, kill and destroy us, but our Father’s intention is to give us life and that more abundantly!
The Bible says in Isaiah 55:8-9, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
The Bottom Line
We can trust our Father’s will, plans, and direction for our lives because His ways are so much better than ours!
The Bible assures us that, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.” (1 Corin. 2: 9)
So let’s choose to hide His Word in our hearts that we might not sin against Him.
Let’s choose to trust in our Redeemer wholeheartedly, by surrendering our lives to Him completely.
Let’s choose to lean on our Father’s understanding not our own, by seeking His will unswervingly.
Let’s choose to follow our Leader’s footsteps obediently, knowing that one day we will be in heaven with Him for all eternity.
“All the way my Savior leads me;
O, the fullness of His love!
O, the sureness of His promise
In the triumph of His blood!
And when my spirit clothed immortal
Wings it’s flight to realms of day,
This my song through endless ages:
Jesus led me all the way!”
