How to Be Patient When God Makes You Wait

Mar 13, 2017 | 78 comments

Wait patiently for the LordBe brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.” – Psalm 27:14

What are you waiting on God for?

A husband or wife?

A baby of your own?

A prodigal son or daughter to come home?

Salvation for your loved ones?

Healing or good health?

Financial provision?

Or something else?

At times it can seem impossible to keep trusting that God will come through for you.

And, have the patience to not grow bitter and lose heart.

But many times God will give us a promise and make us wait to receive it.

Why?

Why can’t we name it and claim it?

Why does God sometimes change the plans we’ve made for ourselves?

Why Does God Make Us Wait?

“Therefore I will look to the LordI will wait for the God of my salvation; my God will hear me.” – Micah 7:7

We know God created the entire universe in only 6 days. (See Genesis 1)

So why does He make us wait sometimes years before He answers our prayers?

You see, it all goes back to God’s sovereignty.

It’s not a matter of if God can answer a prayer.

It’s a no-brainer that God can do anything He wills to do. (Matthew 19:26)

It’s a matter of if it’s His will and His timing to answer a prayer.

In His perfect timing, God will answer your prayers and give you the desires of your heart.

But God has reasons for the doors He opens and closes when He opens and closes them. (Isaiah 55:8)

Reasons we may never fully understand until we get to heaven.

We have to remember He is creator God and in full and complete control of our lives.

So when He has you wait, you need to trust that He has a good reason for it.

If you rush the waiting process, you will actually miss out on what God wants to do in and through you during that time.

So the question then becomes, is what you want, what you are asking for, really all that good for you?

And, if the answer is yes. Do you trust God enough to have patience until He brings it to pass?

God is the Giver of Good Gifts—Good Gifts Worth the Wait!

If you ask God for some bread,  do you really think He will give you a stone?

Of course not!

If He loves you enough to have His Son Jesus Christ literally die on the cross for you, “how much MORE will He freely give you all things?” (See Matthew 7:11)

I was praying for a husband and father for my son for 7 years!

I sometimes questioned God if it would ever happen to me. And, why it was taking so long.

I was so impatient and discontent, it actually made me sick sometimes!

But it did happen.

When I least expected it and fully surrendered it in my heart to the Lord.

God showed Himself as faithful and brought me a husband.

But the waiting period was tough!

Many nights I cried myself to sleep, and at times, got angry with God that He wasn’t answering my prayers when I wanted Him to.

But looking back in hindsight, I get it.

I see exactly why God had me wait. And, why He chose the person He chose for me.

Honestly, I thank God He didn’t answer my prayer to my will in my timing.

If my husband and I would have met and got married any sooner than we did, it would have been a disaster!

So trust that in the waiting period, God is working behind the scenes.

If He says “wait” it doesn’t mean “no”.

It just means, “not yet”.

He is doing a work deep within your heart you’d never experience otherwise.

His will is to grow you, not torture you.

To mold you, not destroy you…

To draw you closer to Him, not push you away…

And to prepare you for what He has planned for you, not give you something you’re not ready to receive.

David Defeated Goliath with a Small Stone, not a Bazooka!

“David said, “The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”’ – 1 Samuel 17:36

David had the faith and confidence to take on the giant, Goliath, when everyone else, including King Saul, was too afraid to.

Why?

David wasn’t the Rambo or Chuck Norris of the Old Testament.

He wasn’t driving an army tank or carrying a bazooka.

David only had a sling and 5 small stones!

In all reality, the odds were definitely against him.

So why did a little shepherd boy feel so empowered and so able to defeat a giant so much taller and stronger than him?

Because David knew he wouldn’t be fighting alone.

God prepared him for this very battle in the waiting period.

And because of that preparation, David had confidence that the God who helped him defeat the lion and the bear would also help him defeat this giant.

He remembered how God came through for him before.

So David knew God would come through for him again.

God will also prepare you for all that He has for you.

And that is not a process that happens overnight.

That is why waiting on His perfect timing is so important.

Could you imagine what David would have felt like if God gave him Goliath before he was ready?

Before he had experienced firsthand God’s perfect track record of faithfulness?

So if you have been praying about something and God is telling you to wait, understand that this time in between is necessary.

Have faith that God is working and will answer the cries of your heart when the timing is perfect.

Are there any lions, bears, or giants before you?

Then ask God to help you endure and overcome them just like He did for David.

Remember that He promises to never leave or forsake you. (Hebrews 13:5)

God promises to defeat the enemy and deliver you. (Jeremiah 1:19)

He promises to answer you. (1 John 5:14-15)

And, God promises to strengthen you as you wait on Him to come through for you. (Isaiah 40:31)

How Past Prayers Can Help You Wait on God—Today

I like to think of answered prayers as modern day miracles or “God moments.”

A God moment is something only God can do.

It’s a time in your life that you’ve seen God answer a specific request or fulfill a personal promise to you.

These should be written down in your journal or on little papers in a blessings jar.

So when new trials and tests come, you can look back and see what God’s already done.

Again, it was when David remembered how God gave him victory over the lion and the bear, that He was confident he’d have victory over Goliath.

If God was faithful before you can be sure He will be faithful again.

My husband and I are now praying, and waiting, for God to bless us with a baby.

And after a couple miscarriages so far, sometimes the waiting is so hard.

But because I’ve chosen to trust God and wait on His perfect timing, I have peace and contentment.

Looking back I saw God was faithful in bringing me my husband.

So I know He will be faithful in bringing us another child if it’s His perfect will for us.

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)

Remembering what God has already done for you, will increase your faith in Him.

It will reassure your heart that if He was willing and able to answer your prayer yesterday.

Then He will be willing and able to answer your prayers again and again.

Key Takeaway

Think about it.

If you didn’t have to wait a whole year until Christmas morning to open presents, it wouldn’t be as exciting.

You wouldn’t have anything to look forward to.

The same goes when you have to wait on God to answer your prayers.

Waiting gives you something to hope for, pray for, and look to God alone for.

So if you’re in a season of waiting—don’t lose heart.

And don’t give up on God.

Continue pouring out your hearts desires to Him and trusting that if it’s in His perfect will, then He will bring it to pass.

Remember, He is your heavenly Father and knows what’s best for you.

He has good gifts in store for your life.

“Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to you from God”.  (See James 1:17)

Looking back, I’ve learned to thank Him for all of those times He didn’t answer my prayers the way I wanted Him to.

Because His plans for me were so much better than what I had originally planned for myself.

The Bible says our hearts are deceitfully wicked above all else! (See Jeremiah 17:9)

And many times we’re so easily influenced and deceived.

That’s why it’s so important to surrender everything to God so you don’t make a wrong choice or go the wrong way.

Perhaps what you want so badly will actually make you miserable or draw you away from God.

Or maybe it is God’s perfect will, but not His perfect timing.

Trust me, God’s perfect will at the wrong time can be just as bad as His imperfect will at any time.

You have to purpose in your heart to wait for His absolute best.

And believe by faith that He will make all things beautiful in His perfect timing.” (Ecc. 3:11)

Remember, He has never let you down and He never will.

“Ask and believe
You’re gonna see
The hand of God in every little thing
Don’t you be afraid

Of giants in your way
With God you know that anything’s possible
So step into the fight
He’s right there by your side
The stones inside your hand might be small
But watch the giants fall…”

Francesca Battistelli – “Giants Fall”

You are an awesome woman – having received this post at the perfect time! You see I was laid off from work a few years ago in August 2014 and have struggled ever since to find a permanent job that will afford us to keep our home and one with health benefits. I applied with a company approx. 6-months ago…since then I have taken 2 exams, 2 interviews and a lot of waiting in between – Well I just received word this morning with a job offer! It seemed to take sooooo long – I took temp jobs here & there but my eye was always on this opportunity & through the wait period I found myself relying fully on God, Trusting Him more than ever before without reservation, and fellowshiping with other like minded Christian women…Bible reading, worship praise, and more praying – Drawing me so close to my LORD, my Father, My All-In-All! Then immediately popped up your Devotional. God Bless you and your family Amanda – A God-send from Above Ü♥

Right now my husband is still waiting to get a full time job so what you shared really gave me hope that God will open that door for him as well in His perfect timing. Many times God allows us to go through trials and season of waiting to encourage others going through them as well. You will be able to share this with so many people Laura and point them all to Jesus! =] I am so blessed that God spoke to you in this devotional. Thank you again for sharing. I pray for healing for my wife and I. We are dire need of it and that we both find our calling financially and will be blessed with it. For myself, finding my purpose and God’s plan for me as it has been hard my entire life. Times I pray to be what I was when I was younger because I was happy and serving a purpose. Now at 35, I am lost and trying to turn my faith to Christ and praying he hears me and will heal me and us!

Hi Ryan, thank you so much for your comment. Remember, if you still have breath in your lungs then God is not finished with you yet. To everything there is a season. And maybe you’re just in a season where God simply wants you to be still. Or, maybe that opportunity you’ve been waiting for is just around the corner. The key is to try and be content no matter what. (So much easier said then done) lol but really try to not let the things of this world or the circumstances your in define you or hinder your walk with God. The enemy will rob you of your joy and get you to question God’s love and plans for you in times like these but rebuke him and his lies. The truth is, God is for you not against you! And, He does in fact have a plan and purpose for your life and everything you’re going through. Live each day for Him, keep pressing forward, and keep praying. Read your bible every single day even if it’s for 15 minutes and even schedule an appt. to talk with a Pastor here on staff. Even I sometimes feel like I’m in a rut and start to get discouraged but when I read His Word and talk to a trusted brother or sister about what’s going on…it’s as if God lifts my head up again to see things from His perspective not my own. The Bible even says, “in this life you will have tribulation….but to be of good cheer for Jesus has overcome the world”. (John 16:33) And you won’t be of good cheer if you’re allowing all of these cares, concerns, trials, and tribulations to weigh you down. It’s when you lay them all down at the foot of the cross that the peace that surpasses all understanding comes, the chains get broken, and God starts to move in your heart and life in a powerful way. So be encouraged Ryan, stand on God’s promises, and choose to believe by faith that God is going to turn things around. Somehow, someway, trust that God will come through for you. I read an awesome quote the other day that says, “God didn’t take you to this storm to let you drown. He took you here to teach you how to walk on water.” Praying for you!

Hi Amanda, I’m so sorry you feel all alone and are losing hope. Please hang in there and don’t give up on God. Sometimes we will go through seasons like this…where we feel everyone’s against us. But it’s only a season. Get plugged into a Bible teaching church and surround yourself with other believers. I promise you it’ll get better if you continue praying and seeking the Lord. Because with Him you are never truly all alone. Find comfort in reading the Bible and serving the Lord at your church as well. The Bible says, “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and ALL these things will be added to you.” (Matt. 6:33) So you see…you have to keep seeking the things of God and Him and everything else will start to fall in their proper place. Share the Gospel with your unsaved relatives. You may be the only believer they’ll have any contact with. Perhaps God strategically placed you in that family so you can shine His light and they get saved? So keep knocking, keep seeking, and keep praying okay!! God is with you wherever you go and has a distinct plan for everything He’s allowing you to go through. He loves you so much He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for you…how much MORE will He freely give you all things? Amen? Praying for you!

I’m 43 years old been waiting and praying over ten years now if not more so God will help me have a family just like He has blessed so many people in this world people who are at times so unworthy because first thing they do once they get married is cheating!
Yes I’ve had many prayers answered not denying that actually so many that I can’t remember them all but this particular one hasn’t been answered and I don’t even know if it ever will. So many people have prayed for me as well
who have stronger faith and trust than me.
Quite strangely every time I met a girl to my liking for some reason the relationship didn’t work out either because I’m not a doctor or a lawyer ( as they expected) or perhaps because I’m a believer and it isn’t something most girls want to see in the guy they are dating. I have almost lost hope about this particular issue.
Don’t even know whether it is God’s will for me to ever get married or not. Don’t really know what to do ….

      Hi Steven,

Chances are if you have a desire in your heart to get married one day…God has placed it there to fulfill it. Just keep being patient. I know so many women here at church who are around your age and still single looking for a nice Christian man! So don’t lose hope! Keep praying and seeking God and His perfect will for you in a spouse. I found my husband while on a missions trip so if I were you…i’d start getting more involved in your local bible teaching church. That will be a great place to meet your future spouse! Psalm 37:4 for you!

      Hi Paul,

my advice is to start getting plugged into your local Bible teaching church and really purpose in your heart to serve God and wait for His perfect timing. We have a singles ministry here at CCSB they meet every Friday at 7:00 pm in the Kids Zone Sanctuary. You should come! =] God will give you the desires of your heart as you delight yourself in Him. Focus on becoming that man of God He wants you to be and really seek God with all your heart. He will bless you with a wife when you and her are both ready! =] He did it for me so don’t lose heart okay.

      Hi Vivan!

Praise God! That’s such a good place to be in…when you finally get to the point you’re choosing to wait on the Lord. I have been there, trust me, and it’s definitely not always easy. But I also have been on the other side where He has given me something better than what I was praying and praying for. =] The key here is purposing in your heart to really surrender all of your hopes, dreams, wants, needs, and desires at His feet. Because, like you said, you trust Him enough to give you His best! His best that is well worth the wait and any sacrifice you made. God bless you!

Great blog. I needed this. I have been separated from my husband for over two decades and we still never divorced. We moved on and developed other relationships. We were married young so very much unknowledgeable. It did not work out so we finally ended it. We have always continued to see eachother off and on but now, lately it has been on. We see eachother all the time and talk everyday. We’ve watched eachother grow up and become adults. I told him I want my husband back and we have been seeing eachother frequently since. We established we still love eachother and want to work on our marriage and being together. Im no longer seeing anyone for 5 years now but he is still involved with someone and children are involved. Im waiting impatiently for us to become one again but trying my best to be patient. So finding your blog helped settle me a littile bit, thanks.

Thanks for sharing your story. Indeed waiting on the Lord is tough. Been waiting on my Boaz for many years…i am 43 and lonely. Also find it really difficult to exercise faith any more in this area.
I am all prayed out, all scriptured out…just really wanna see some result.

    Hi there,

God told me to wait about 3 years ago after I met a young man. I’ve told this story a lot of times but nobody ever seems to care much about the sentiment behind it, so I’ll spare you the long story of why it mattered so much that I met this young man, and I’ll spare myself the heartache of somebody’s not getting or caring about the sentiment.

Nevertheless, I met someone and, from all the occurrences in 2 evenings, I knew he was the one (yes, I know that sounds corny and cliche but it is what it is). More than that, however, I had the strong feeling that after our second date, I wouldn’t see him again. That’s what hurt me deeply. He and I kept in touch a few months after seeing each other but he lived in one state and I another. He was a med student in his last year, I was just starting a new program in my field. I was saved at the time, he was still trying to figure things out in with his faith. At the time we were both 28 years old.

All throughout the time we kept in touch, I prayed to the Lord that I’d get to see him again and I prayed that He was in fact the one for me, that God would speak to me and guide me in that way. I never saw him again, and that did a number on my heart, but every time I prayed to the Lord, He’d tell me to wait,, whether it was through scripture or other people. “Be still, and know that I am God” was the scripture that continued to pop up. I even received a letter in the mail from an old friend I hadn’t heard from in some time. It was a handmade card with a short message inside that encouraged me not to fret, don’t be impatient in waiting, and not worry about the cares of my heart but to trust God in the process. This person had no idea what was going on with me, but when asked why they sent the card they said they couldn’t sleep. They said I was heavily on their heart, so they sought the Lord and that’s what He led them to write.

I’d really like to be in a relationship, but I don’t want to get ahead of the Lord. If he told me to wait, I want to obey Him, but it’s been 3 years now. A good but difficult 3 years. I trust that the Lord has been using this time to heal my heart and to mold me and guide me. I also know that had that acquaintance evolved into a relationship, it would’nt have gone well at the time. I don’t know God wants me to wait on this young man or if He wants me to wait for another guy. All I know is I don’t want to wait anymore. Im lonely. In this 3 year span, my best friend has dated 3 men, and has been with one for over a year now. My friend got married, got pregnant, had a miscarriage, and now pregnant again. My other friends have had children, my friends have got married. And all they can say is “trust God” or, “you need to get out more”. I’m almost convinced that God doesn’t care whether I get married and thus has forgotten about me. Either that, or the whole marriage thing simply isn’t His will for my life. I’m hurt. I don’t know what to do anymore.

      Hi Arei,

I’m in your position as well. 3 years later and I’m still being told to wait. And of course so frustrated. I prayed asking God to lead me to something before doing this search and came across this awesome blog post. And then your comment.

Our stories almost seem identical – “be still and know that I am God” has become one of my favorite verses. My person is a friend in my life – which I think it makes it even harder.

The only thing I can tell you, is if God is making you wait – please wait. I know it’s hard to watch your friends come after you and get married and have kids and have what you want – but rushing ahead of God is a bad idea. Allow Him to mold you into the person He wants you to be.

While I am still waiting, I have literally watched my life transform in that time. Don’t give up on God. Trust His timing and His lead. He will reward your obedience – I can promise you that.

22 years?!? Oh my!!! How old are you?!? I’m 29 & will be hitting 30 I really hope I’m not waiting too long! I was told by 1 of the pastor’s at my church that i wouldn’t be waiting 17 years for a husband which she was because she first started praying for him when she was a teenager.

Truly inspiring message. About 6 years ago after the birth of my daughter, I started to feel empty and worthless and I cried out to God to save me. I was drowning. I wanted more for my life. I had no regular job and my business was failing. Some how I got a job and was happy but it didn’t last very long. I wanted more because I knew I wasn’t were I was supposed to be. I started my masters but couldn’t complete it due to lack of funds. Around that time, the Lord gavee a personal promise that he would send me to school and give me a Job in diplomacy, to the glory of his name. 2 years later, an opportunity came to apply for a scholarship, I did even though I knew I wasn’t qualified. Out of 480 applicants, I was selected. That was a turning point in my life. Now I am waiting for the fulfilment of the other word. Its hard but with God all things are possible. I have applied to every opening that fits my skills set but got no offer. I got demoralized but somehow, my faith is being renewed. If God said it, he will do it.
