Family Dinners

Family dinners are short devotions that you can share around your dinner table at home. Come back here every week for new devotions that you can use to encourage your family to follow the way of Christ.

Family Dinner: December 11th- 17th

Christmas Series: His Name is Jesus!

Open your Bibles to Isaiah chapter 9 and read verse 6 together.

Isaiah prophesied many years before that Jesus would be born, and that He would be known as Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace.

Discuss the following questions together as a family:

  1. What comes to mind when you hear the name Jesus?
  2. Why do you love Jesus?
  3. How do you trust Jesus through a hard situation?

Practical: Pray for the person that you put on the Prayer Banner daily.

Family Dinner: December 4th – 10th

LIFE Skill: Self-Control

Open your Bibles to 2 Timothy chapter 1 and read verse 7 together.

God has given us His Helper, the Holy Spirit, helping us to be like He is – without fear, powerful, love and a sound mind (or self-control).

Discuss the following questions together as a family.

  1. How would you describe self-control as Paul is talking about here in 2 Timothy 1:7?
  2. Why is it important to have self-control?
  3. As a Christian, how does having the Holy Spirit help us to have self-control?

Practical: Find one more verse or passage in the Bible that shows Jesus displaying self-control.

Family Dinner: November 27th – December 3rd

LIFE Skill: Gentleness

Open your Bibles to Matthew chapter 11 and read verses 28-30 together.

Jesus, Almighty and powerful, flips the cultural norm of toughness upside down as He is the most gentle, humble and loving man to ever step foot on the earth.

Discuss the following questions together as a family.

  1. How did Jesus display gentleness?
  2. Why do you think that in our world today, gentleness is often perceived as a sign of weakness?
  3. How has God been gentle with you?

Practical: Through prayer, surrender to God what He has asked you to let go of and trust Him for gentle rest.

Family Dinner: November 20th – 26th

LIFE Skill: Faithfulness

Open your bibles to 2 Timothy chapter 2 and read verse 13 together.

God never changes and His character of WHO He is never changes because of what we do or don’t do, even when we choose something or someone instead of Him. He unconditionally loves us despite our performance. Jesus is forever faithful to His children!

Discuss the following questions together as a family.

  1. What does it mean for someone to be faithful?
  2. Since we know that God is faithful, even when we are not, what are ways we can be more faithful to God?
  3. How has God been faithful to you?

Practical: Invite another family over for Thanksgiving dinner this week and discuss God’s faithfulness together.

Family Dinner: November 13th – 19th

LIFE Skill: Goodness

Open your Bibles to Exodus 34 and read verse 6 together.

God is good to us even to those who reject Him. We now follow Jesus, but we weren’t always following Him, and yet God pursues us because of His loving goodness towards us.

Discuss the following questions together as a family.

  1. How would you describe goodness?
  2. As a Christian, why would it be important for us to display goodness in our lives?
  3. Share about a time that God has been good to you.

Practical: Share how God has been good to you with someone who does not know Jesus.
