How To Thrive In Your Walk With God

So, I was sitting in my aptly named La-Z-Boy in the living room the other day.

The weather was hot and humid, and I sure didn’t feel like doing anything.

I never had air conditioning installed in my home because I felt the cost outweighed the number of really hot days we have in the South Bay.

I was now paying the price for that misguided thinking.

As I sat in my La-Z-Boy doing absolutely nothing but whining and wiping sweat off my brow, I was looking out the door at my neighbor’s beautiful, large maple tree.

I couldn’t help but admire it.

It was majestic in its own right.

It was tall, and its green leaves were lush.

Then I looked at the two holes in my front yard where my trees used to be.

Ravaged by neglect and insects, they dried out and eventually died.

The gardener got so tired of looking at them that one day he just chain-sawed them into oblivion.

Uh oh…I felt a modern parable coming on.

OK, Lord, I get it. Forgive me.

Are You Neglecting Your Walk With God?

You may be like me in this regard.

There are just too many times to count.

Are you always saying:

  • I will water my walk with the Lord another day.
  • I will prune my walk with the Lord so that it will grow stronger … another day.
  • I will feed and nurture my walk with the Lord another day.

Before you know it, instead of having a majestic maple tree, you have two dead trees and a hole in the ground.

And that can easily happen to our walk with the Lord.

Neglecting something is easy.

Giving something the attention it deserves, even demands are quite another.

God has a wonderful way of reminding me of these golden precepts:

Are You Anchored In His Word?

To be anchored in “His Word” is, literally, to be anchored in Jesus Christ.

His Word is the breathing, living embodiment of Jesus.

His Word is the sustenance that feeds our tree…us!

Here is what John 1: 1-5 says:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him, nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

It is absolutely vital that we are “in the Word” … because the Word is in us.

Are You Anchored In The Lord?

Let’s start with Jesus.

He is our foundation.

We grow in Him.

We branch out in Him.

As a tree grows in strength, its roots stretch deeper into the ground.

When the storms come, it won’t be blown away.

It will be anchored.

What is your soil like that anchors this tree?

Planted in Jesus, we grow strong roots so that we will not be moved or shaken in the storms of life.

Otherwise, we are like chaff that blows away.

So, then, how much is Jesus is like a strong tree?

Are you “feeding” your walk with the Lord?

Trees need sunshine and water to thrive.

Our sunshine is the light of Jesus that has overcome the darkness.

You need water. Jesus is the Living Water so that no one may thirst anymore.

Are you constantly “pruning and trimming” your walk with the Lord?

When a tree is pruned and trimmed it grows stronger.

Nutrients are no longer diverted to stems and branches that keep the tree from prospering and reaching its full potential.

How do we prune?

We cut away the things of the world that are of evil intent, that divert nutrients to our walk with the Lord.

Things that are not needed or are merely a distraction.

Thus, we grow stronger.

We prune the things of this world.

God prunes us!

John 15: 1-5 offers another look at Jesus’ “spiritual gardening”:

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit He prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the Word I have spoken to you.

Remain in Me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me. I Am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.”

Key Takeaway

Is your walk with the Lord like the Sahara Desert or the Garden of Eden?

Will you grow your walk with the Lord by being attentive?

Or, see it dry out and wither from neglect?

Light, water, and sustenance are all there.

We just need to stop neglecting it.

Because only Jesus Christ will ever truly satisfy.

Take to heart Jesus’ answer to the Samaritan woman at the well as described in John 4: 13-14:

“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

For those who don’t know Jesus or have tasted of His water of eternal life, a water that will keep you from ever thirsting again, I leave you with this profound scripture from John 6:40:

“For My Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

With a reminder like this, why on Earth would I ever allow myself to neglect my walk with the Lord?

How To Have Faith That God Can Do Anything

How To Have Faith That God Can Do Anything

Abraham never wavered in believing God’s promise…He was fully convinced that God is able to do whatever He promises.” – Romans 4:20-21

When I was a little girl, I wanted to become an astronaut when I grew up.

I didn’t envision all the steps it would take to become one.

I just envisioned myself jumping around on the moon in a spacesuit.

Now as an adult, my dreams of sitting in a rocket ship, blasting off into outer space, has become nothing more than a childhood fantasy.

However, this concept of unlimited possibilities has not changed merely because my age has.

When we surrender our lives to Jesus Christ, He will accomplish so much more than we ever thought possible.

Because the possibilities indeed are endless with Him at work in and through our lives.

Similar to a little child, we are to have faith that our Father will provide everything we need.

And, take us to places beyond our wildest dreams.

God will surprise you.

God will amaze you.

God will completely blow you away.

So make sure that you always dream big!

Will God Really Come Through For You?

God is not a fairytale.

He definitely isn’t comparable to a comic book superhero in spandex tights…

But sometimes we’re guilty of comparing Him to one.

Due to a lack of faith, we limit our un-limitable God.

Instead of believing His promises, we expect Him to let us down.

It’s so easy to walk by sight—making decisions and coming to conclusions based on circumstances and emotions…

But God calls us to do just the opposite.

God calls us to walk by faith, not by sight.

As Christians, we are to trust in God completely, even when we can’t visually see the work being done circumstantially.

Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.” Hebrews 11:1

But faith is not something we can muster up ourselves, it’s rarely (if ever) our first response to a trying situation.

God in His grace and mercy, actually gives us faith as a gift.

Kind of like free samples at Costco—you simply have to partake of them! 😀

Faith is our hopeful expectation that what God says will happen, will happen.

And what He says won’t happen, won’t.

It comes from hearing God’s Word and believing His promises will be fulfilled.

And, from trusting in God even when it doesn’t make any sense and you don’t understand.

What Moves You—Fear or Faith?

As Christians, we are to be moved solely by God’s Word.

Not our fears, emotions, or personal opinions.

There is God’s bright shining light at the end of your trial.

So if you’re going through a storm right now—don’t give up.

Don’t allow fear or unbelief paralyze you.

Turn that fear into faith by trusting in God with all of your heart. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

If He has brought you to it, He will get you through it!

Not some things—ALL things!

He promises to complete the good work He began in you.

So regardless of what season you’re in right now— you do have hope.

One day you will be in heaven, and all of your tears will be wiped away.

Start looking past the rubbish in this world, the rubbish in your personal life…

And you’ll see God still sitting on His heavenly throne—high and lifted up.

2 Chronicles 20:15 assures us, “The battle is not ours, but God’s.”

And with God fighting your battles, you will go from victory to victory every single time.

God Will Go Above And Beyond For You

“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think…” – Ephesians 3:20

You were not created to handle life all on your own.

Take comfort in knowing that the God who created everything in the entire universe in only 6 days is mindful of you and what you’re going through.

He loves you more than you could ever begin to imagine.

God has a distinct purpose for your life. (Jeremiah 29:11)

He will not leave you to fend for yourself.

As you cry out to your Jesus, He will come to your rescue.

He will reconfirm that He is still there, and has never left you.

So when God says He will handle it, without a shadow of a doubt, He will.

We no longer have to step on whoever is in our path to get the job.

We no longer have to manipulate and control people to get our way.

We no longer have to worry about absolutely anything! (Phil. 4:6-7)

As mere human beings, we fall short time and time again.

But as Christians, we no longer have to solely rely on our own resources, abilities, and bank accounts.

We have the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, directing our steps.

And, enabling us to do all that He wills us to do.

Key Takeaway

“With God all things are possible.” – Matthew 19:26

You were not created by accident or mistake.

Your life has meaning, significance, and a final destination – heaven for all eternity.

  • You can love and forgive friends and family members who’ve hurt you.
  • You can stay married to your spouse for better and for worse.
  • You can raise godly children who fear God and respect you.
  • You can wait for the promises of God to be fulfilled without wavering in your faith.
  • You can resist temptations.
  • You can keep pressing forward in the midst of a trial, persecution, or affliction.

How? Through Christ who gives you the strength! (Philippians 4:13)

So if you still have breath in your lungs, your Heavenly Father is not finished with you yet.

He still has plans in store for your life above and beyond all you could ever imagine.

Similar to how He parted the Red Sea through Moses for His chosen people…

God will open doors you never even knew existed.

He will make a way when there seems to be no way.

The possibilities for your life are endless since you’ve placed it in God’s almighty hands.

So choose today to stay hopeful, expect the unexpected, and dream bigger dreams.

Choose today to simply believe!

How To Be Rapture Ready In The Last Days

How To Be Rapture Ready In The Last Days

I guess we just can’t help ourselves.

So long as we have meteor showers and solar eclipses, there are those in the religious and secular communities who insist they know what day Jesus is coming back.

So far, they’ve all been wrong.

And they will continue to be wrong.

My advice is to pay them no heed, both preacher, and soothsayer.

Here is all you need to know: BE READY

Sure, predictions make great headlines, but it’s fake news.

Sure, it puts someone’s “brilliant analytical biblical scholarly thinking” on display, but to no avail.

Man will never be smarter than God.

Prognosticators are “of this world” and, I’m afraid, predestined to be foolish.

1 Cor. 3:19 reminds us:

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness.”

Why bother predicting His return when Jesus Himself said that even HE doesn’t know…only God the Father knows that day.

Mark 13:32-33:

But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come.

Jesus wants us to be ready.

He could come today while you are reading this.

Or, He can come years from now.

Jesus will return when God tells Him to.

Jesus tells us in Rev. 22:20 that He will come soon.

“Soon” doesn’t mean “right this second.”

Soon can mean 1,000 years in God’s time.

And God’s timing is, well, perfect!

Rather than trying to predict the return of Jesus, the Bible counsels us to be ready for His return.

Matthew 24:44:

So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

1 Thessalonians 5:2:

For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.

The message is clear.

Don’t predict.

Just be ready.

Are You Trying To Predict Christ’s Return?

Bible scholars, preachers, psychics, and the well-intentioned can’t help themselves.

The need to predict when Jesus will return may as well be in their DNA.

How has that been working out?

Not one prediction has ever panned out.

They shout: Here’s my brilliant theological road map! Here are the 14 signs announcing Christ’s return! Check out all the major prophecy’s being fulfilled! Solar eclipse = Jesus is Coming Now! Israel is now a state, and the end is near!!!

And yet, it’s all in God’s timing, is it not?

Predicting the return of Jesus is not a modern phenomenon.

It harkens back to ancient Rome when theologians said Jesus would return in the year 500.

Here is a link to many others whose predictions have fallen by the wayside.

Psychics like the late Jeane Dixon make headlines predicting the return of Jesus (her next date for his return is 2020).

Others, like fundamentalist preacher Jerry Falwell, fudged the timeline, saying Jesus would appear sometime between 1999 and 2009.

Still, others like to move those spiritual goalposts.

Radio preacher Harold Camping and televangelist Jack Van Impe kept moving the dates farther into the future when their latest prediction would fall flat.

This need to predict has cast a dark cloud over the works of some great and otherwise Kingdom-building men, including the late Pastor Chuck Smith, the founding father of Calvary Chapel.

I love Chuck Smith. I love his teachings. I love how much he loved God and genuinely cared for everyone.

In his 1978 book, End Times, Smith predicted the generation of 1948 would be the last generation, and that the world would end by 1981 … at the latest.

They even had a New Year’s Eve service awaiting Jesus’ return.

That had to be a disappointment!

Keep Jesus At The Center Of It All

There is a two-fold lesson to be learned from the mistakes of others.

  • One, if God wanted us to know the day Jesus would return He would have told us.
  • Two, no matter how smart or clever we think we are, we can never “one up” God.

It’s folly to make such a prediction.

  • It hurts the church.
  • It plays into the world’s hands and is ammunition to lob more spiteful anti-Christian rhetoric.
  • It plays into a mass media that doesn’t care one whit about God and his principles.

The world wants to laugh at Christians.

That is why we are “not of this world.”

When you lay out a claim that Jesus is returning on a certain day, you are dealing in absolutes.

And when that absolute never happens, you are left with disappointment … and fewer church members if you are a pastor.

Stay focused on Jesus. He is our Lord and Savior…and our friend.

No matter how simplistic it sounds, “What a friend we have in Jesus” is a literal truth.

It’s more than just a Sunday school song.

And I know my Friend is coming for me, in Father God’s timing.

It carries a lot of heavenly weight, as Jesus tells us in John 15:15:

“I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know His master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.”

What is slow to us, is purposeful to God.

He wants none to perish, as 2 Peter 3:9 lays out:

The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

So here’s a fact.

Jesus will return on the day God sends Him.

And when He returns, it will be quite a scene.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17:

For the Lord, himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.

So, it’s not a question of when will Jesus return.

The question is … are you ready?
