Main Scriptures: John 19, 2 Corinthians 4, John 12

  • John 19:30
    • “It is finished”
      • It is one word in the original language
      • It means “completed” and “perfected”
      • It was written on paid receipts in the Roman world
    • He is talking to His Father
  • It is a word of
    • Salvation
      • We were dead in sin and unable to save ourselves
      • He was without sin, and therefore, able to save us
      • God was satisfied with His sinless life
    • Completion
      • Legalism has no place in the life of the Christian (Ephesians 2:8-9)
        • Christ alone is enough (1 Corinthians 2:2)
      • He will also bring His work in us to completion (Philippians 1:6)
        • We do this in relationship with Him, not rule following and religion
    • Motivation
      • He was committed to God’s will His whole life at all costs (Psalm 88:15, John 17:4)
      • We can be motivated to press on because of Jesus’ example (2 Corinthians 4:7-10)
    • Proclamation
      • He disarmed the enemy (Hebrews 2:14)
      • We can claim this victory as our own—despite the enemy’s lies (James 4:7)
    • Inspiration
      • This moment was planned from the foundation of the world (Revelation 13:8)
        • He fulfilled over 400 prophesies
          • He so trusted the word of God that He made this statement before many of them were even completed (e.g. that His body would be pierced from Zechariah 12, that His bones wouldn’t be broken from Psalm 34, that He would be buried in a rich man’s grave from Isaiah 53)
            • We can trust His promises for our future
