Main Scriptures: 1 Peter 5, Mark 2, Matthew 12
Date of Message: October 30, 2022
- 1 Peter 5:7 – we need to cast our cares on God, for He cares for us
- Peter knew that Jesus cared; he was restored by Jesus even after Peter denied him
- Mark was a disciple of Peter, so we should not be surprised that he records that God cares for us too
- Mark 2:23-24
- Jesus returned to Jerusalem after he had healed the man at Bethesda the week before
- Jesus walked through the grainfields on the Sabbath with his disciples – they gleaned from the field and ate
- The Pharisees were waiting for them and critiqued them for not following their tradition (by eating from the grainfield)
- Matthew 11:28-30 – Jesus called those who were weary and heavy-laden to come to Him for rest
- Mark 2:25-6 – Jesus referred to a story of David from the Old Testament
- When we dig into the Word of God, we need to purpose to know the heart of God
- The Pharisees
- Whenever we’re reading the Old Testament, we need to read it through the filter of everything we know about Jesus
- In the story, David had a need (hunger)—he was running for his life from King Saul (1 Samuel 13:14 tells about Saul losing the kingdom and David’s heart). He ate the showbread which he wasn’t supposed to eat.
- But God did not condemn him for it.
- Mark 2:27-28
- The Sabbath was made for man
- God cares that we get rest!
- Because Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath, He’s the authority on this issue
- Mark 3:1-2
- Jesus enters the synagogue and encounters a man with a withered man (see also Luke 6:6-11, Matthew 12:9-13)
- The religious leaders watched to see whether Jesus would heal the man
- In that time, those who were disabled were considered cursed by God
- Mark 3:3
- Jesus told the man to come to Him
- In the same way, Jesus calls us to come to Him
- Jesus cares about our well-being
- Jesus told the man to come to Him
- Mark 3:4-5
