Scriptures: Joshua 20, Habakkuk 1, Hebrews 6

  • There are things we do that God cares about, and when we do them, we give Him glory
    • He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7)
      • The greatest display of His care for you was on the cross
    • God is worthy to receive glory (Revelation 5:12)
    • God alone is to be glorified (1 Peter 4:11)
    • He must increase, but I must decrease (John 3:30)
  • We learn about Him in His Word to do His will His way
    • Doing what God wants brings Him glory (John 17:4)
  • Discipleship glorifies God
    • Passing on faith to others glorifies God
    • Jesus called disciples to Himself freely (Mark 3:13)
    • We are all called to make disciples (Matthew 28:19)
    • Are you being discipled? (2 Timothy 2:2)
  • Protecting the sanctity of life glorifies God
    • The Levites’ job was to protect the people in their care who fled to their cities
    • As the church, it’s our job to actively protect the innocent from being killed (Revelation 1:6)
    • The church is pro-life
      • It is not a political stance–it’s a spiritual stance because God cares about protecting the sanctity of life
      • He knit us together in our mother’s womb
    • He wants to protect our lives from sin
  • Being just glorifies God
    • God opens the door for a just trial in the city of refuge 
    • God is just–that makes all of His decisions just, right and true
    • Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne (Psalm 89:14)
    • Jesus paid the price of our sins because God is just (1 Peter 3:18)
    • No matter what we’ve done, the way we can glorify God’s justice is to receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior
    • We may not understand the justice of God, so God says “trust Me”
    • He wants us to be just (Micah 6:8)
  • Correcting culture glorifies God
    • The cities of refuge regulate retribution
  • Providing refuge glorifies God
    • Everyone had access to these cities  
    • The cities of refuge remind us of Someone
    • Jesus is available to anyone–all can come to Him (Matthew 11:28-30)
