Are You REALLY Growing in the Lord or Just Getting By?

Feb 3, 2014 | 9 comments

I have a question for every Christian: should your life change as you grow nearer to God?

Should you be able to notice any changes in your character and personality as you are growing older in the Lord?

While you probably know that your answer should be a resounding “yes,” reality may be a little different.

After all, you are human and a work in progress.

Your lifestyle should be a lifestyle of worship that is holy unto the Lord, but you will find yourself falling short sometimes.

You should be a sparkling light in a world of darkness but if you haven’t been lately, don’t worry, you can find some encouragement in Psalm 73.

Psalm 73:28

Asaph wrote in Psalm 73:

“But it is good for me to draw near to God; I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all Your works.”

There should be a noticeable change in your life as you grow nearer to God.

It does not have to be a dramatic change, but there should be small subtle changes over long periods of time which will be hard to notice sometimes.

The Things That Prevent You From Becoming More Like Jesus

We all have to deal with the obstacles that the world places in our way.

These often come in the form of trials and tribulations.  When you go through these difficult times, you’ll often take your eyes off of God and put them on your problem.

However, you have the Comforter (i.e. God) to lean on. God is your rock.

The more you learn to trust God for everything in your life, the less time that you’ll spend worrying about things you can’t change.

God’s peace is available to His child in the middle of a terrible storm.

This is the peace of God that guards your heart and mind and that transcends ALL understanding.

Key Takeaway

You will resemble God the closer that you get to Him.

So the question isn’t IF you should get closer to God, the question is ARE you getting closer to God this year?

It’s isn’t too late to make a change if you haven’t been spending time with God lately.

He knows you better than anyone. He cares about you more than anyone. He loves you more than anyone.

So if you’ve been falling short lately and haven’t noticed any growth in your spiritual life, it’s time for you to make a heavenly phone call.

Pray to your Abba Father and tell Him you’re sorry you haven’t been spending time with Him.

Pray to your Abba Father and tell Him you want to change and be more like Jesus.

Pray to your Abba Father and tell Him you want the courage to be able to make the changes that He wants you to make in your life.

Then pick up your Bible and prepare to hear from God.

Question:  How much time do you think is “enough” when it comes to spending time with God?

  1. Hopper

Thanks Wendelin P. for this weeks Blog, and being able to bless others with God’s Holy Word. Lastly spending time with our God prayerfully as I should be thinking of Him 24/7 and those in the body of Christ.

There is strength in speech. Folk don’t realize the power in there speech. John 1:1. I can only do one thing at a time, with God’s guidance I know I can and will achieve a better love and understanding of self as well as others. If one can’t love self? How can one love others?

    • Peter Guirguis

Let me ask you this Chuck, do you think that we already love ourselves? I mean, didn’t we already inherit that with the fall (Garden of Eden) since we have a selfish sinful nature? Just wondering about your thoughts…

He is talking about negative self-image not necessary self-centerdess.

I follow the advice in Revelations 2 Look to where I was and do the things I did at first. Don´t forget your attitude Paul writes about that more in the pratical portions than any other subject.

    • Peter Guirguis

You are so right about our attitudes Margaret, thank you for that great reminder 🙂

For me I like to spread it out. I will read the scriptures first especially if I get up early and want to go back to sleep, then I will wait later in the morning to study.
I also listen to music and watch sermons.

    • Peter Guirguis

That’s probably the best way to go about your day Margaret. I firmly believe that it’s really important to read the Scriptures as early as possible throughout the day. I think it really has an impact on how our day goes.
